Travel for Gucci was never purely physical

Gucci is the brand that accompanied the artists, writers, actors, and directors of Hollywood on their journeys” says Alessandro Michelle, creative director of Gucci’s new campaign. Starring Hollywood’s golden boy, Ryan Gosling the campaign acts as an homage to not only the brand’s history but the House father Guccio Gucci himself. The setting of the campaign takes part in a whimsical world featuring items from the Valigeria collection including the vintage and contemporary Gucci trolleys, hard and soft suitcases, duffle bags, trunks, hat boxes, and beauty cases made from GG Supreme fabric in diverse shades or in leather with the iconic Web stripe.

Guccio Gucci, worked in his youth as a porter at London’s famous Savoy Hotel. Pushing his own trolleys laden with luggage, the idea behind his artisanal atelier took on life which bleeds beautifully in this new collection. The designs are timeless, vintage and almost rustic. It exudes classiness while maintaining the eclectic and sometimes avant garde sillhoutes Gucci plays with. Popularized now however are their loud, creative and eclectic designs that resonate with artistic individuals and celebrities alike. This collection in comparison, takes a more sophisticated direction. With bags of different shapes and sizes, it will look dashing on anyone and on any outfit.

My personal favourite is the Gucci Savoy Medium Duffle Bag. Comfortable, convenient and stylish, the duffle bag comes in beige/ebony with a brown leather trim. With a contemporary take on a the Double G, a vintage Gucci belt buckle from the 1970s, is repurposed and perches on a textured leather tab accent of the bag. The design reminds me of the kind of bag you could put anything in. Chargers, laptop, books, office supplies, makeup, heck even a bottle of champagne if you’re feeling adventurous. Everything about the bag screams functionality which most bags nowadays sadly lack as many focus more on the design and not the usability. Gucci manages to marry the two with the added bonus of it’s versatile and sleek design.

To me, because of its timeless design, it triples as a work bag, a casual handbag and a bag you could wear at an exclusive event. Pair it with a suit and tie, tinted shades, and an inner collared shirt, it becomes a staple dynamic office piece. Add it to an outfit consisting of a long trench coat, jeans and a a turtleneck, it becomes a subtle showcase of wealth. And you already know it will elevate any bodycon dress with its chunky shape. How can anyone possibly miss it?

Gucci is able to portray a fun, and whimsical side to the masses with their out of the box, maximalist releases especially within the past few years. But most importantly they don’t lose touch of who they are as a brand. The often experimental fashion House shows us that it can, and will stay to its roots no matter where the luxury brand goes with its creative directing – they just sometimes choose not to be! Which is their ultimate strength. When a brand is able to evolve with its original essence still in tact, it means they’re doing something right.
