The Hermès Birkin bag is an iconic handbag named after the actress Jane Birkin. It has been reinvented many times since it was first introduced to the public in the 1980s, and has remained as the exclusive, classic high end staple bag ever since. Unlike many other bags, a Birkin Bag is an investment. The prices increase yearly just like gold or property which is one of the many factors why its such a seeked item for those who enjoy playing socialite.

In an Hermès boutique, prices for a “standard model” made of calfskin start at around €7,000; while on the secondary market, it can be resold for €15,000 and up. The most expensive Birkin was sold for a whopping $379,261. The astonishing price is mostly due to the meticulous craftsmanship and also the limited availability of the bag. Additionally, a cerain relevancy in pop culture manifested its reputation as the most famous handbag globally. Each bag takes up to 40 hours to produce, from cutting up perfect pieces of leather to metal embellishments.
A bag’s quantity is super limited as most clients are only offered “quota bags” which are limited to two models per year per customer if they’ve shown a loyal, long-standing purchase history. Most Birkin wearers often buy them from resellers which prices are still very handsome. The prices worldwide are expected to increase between 5% and 10% in January 2023, as opposed to a 4% increase in 2022 so if you’ve been looking for a stylish way to invest your money, invest in a Birkin.
There are many ways you can style your birkin. Celebrities such as the Kardashians are famous for theirs. They often pair the big Birkin bags with their casual glamwear as most celebrities do. Here’s my hot take though. I don’t think Birkins go well with glamwear. The size of the bags are famously shaped that they take up a lot of space. When styled with anything glamorous, it looks awkward. So how should you style it? I would go back to the basics and see how the creator, Jane Birkin styles it. In fact, Birkins were created to carry all of a woman’s belongings. The creator wanted a leather bag that was multipurpose. The bag is meant to be used and abused not just showcased the way many celebrities do now.

Style it the way a rich aunty would. Like it’s just another bag. Stuff it with clothes, accessories and everything you ever wished a bag could carry. Style it like it’s just another disposable item (which obviously is not). I think that’s the key. When this is taken into account, your look will be elevated. For example, check this side by side comparison between how most people style theirs vs Jane Birkin, the founder and creator of Birkin bags.

Of course, this is my own personal opinion and you should style yours which fits your truth the most. I think it’s interesting however, that people often try their best to showcase their Birkins in a pristine way. When its intended use was the exact opposite. Sometimes, in order to progress it’s beneficial to take a few steps back.
Having a handbag as an investment is the most stylish and subtle flex one can have. And with Hermès Birkin, it’s difficult not to see why it’s so coveted.
