Hidden Warmness from Within

Today we are reviewing this artwork by Cedric, a surrealistic oil painting. Let’s get into this grim atmospheric rainforest scape and interpret it.

Review time

Upon first impression it instilled this sense of sadness seeping through the moonlight lit forest like breezing winds. The figure shown I think is the artist’s adult vessel, which is hugging himself and body language, and position is so forlornly. Then comes the little illuminating figure which lights up the grim forest and the self-insert adult figure. After collecting the information, now it’s time for interpretation. 

My interpretation would be that this artwork is mainly about finding their inner child again especially in adulthood where we were told to grow up and to diminish childish joy and interests as we grow into our own person yet peer pressured and molded into societal norms. Loneliness, lost, and depression is common where we just freshly transitioned into adulthood with this new responsibilities and expectations. Often life and work crush a person’s spirit and happiness, so this artwork reminds us to check up with the inner child that lives within ourselves, what it craves and need that has been supressed for quite some time. 

My Personal Opinion

I personally like message intended for the audience, our inner child is indeed the candle inside our vessels and often we forget its needs and neglected them. Then the self-hugging figure reminds me of how we always yearn for deep connections and feeling isolated or lonely in current age of the world. Or it could be seeking love from others, and they forget the most important love- which is self-love that should come first. Others can’t really heal you but you yourself from within. Overall, I love the oil painting, the impression and surrealist style really mix well together with the lighting and background atmosphere. The composition is amazing too with the tree trunks bending to create a bit of fisheye effects that helps to lead the viewers’ eyes to focus on the light source and the figures. Colour palette is complimentary with blue and yellow, creates great contrast for the artwork.
